FORGE THE GORGE - Roadside Trail Day

Postby squeezindlemmon » Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:46 am

With the permission of Graining Fork Nature Preserve, LLC (landowners Grant Stephens and John Haight), a trail day has been scheduled for November 19, 2005 at Roadside Crag. This will be a joint effort with the Access Fund and is registered as an Adopt-A-Crag event.

The objective of this trail day is to harden the bases of several popular climbs such as Roadside Attraction, Jump For Joy, Motha, Crazyfingers and many others. Projects include erosion control and possible rerouting of existing trails.

If you are interested in volunteering, please send me a pm. Thanks!

The RRGCC has some extra Rocktoberfest tees and some soft drinks we can provide to volunteers. BTW, Bob, Charlie, & I will be attending an Access Fund meeting for Local Climbing Organizations in Carbondale, Il this weekend. If there is anything you think we should be discussing with the Access Fund send me a PM.

How did the meeting go?

For me the meeting was pretty cool. We got to network with a few local climbing orgs and everyone shared some of their successes and lessons learned. It was essentially an open share session where we got to talk about local issues (which seem to be pretty similar around the country) and see some of the things the Access Fund is working towards both on the national scale and with local climbing orgs. Good people.

Can't speak for Bob and Bill but I learned a ton.

Meet at Roadside parking lot at 9:30-10am. Trail building starts at 10am. If anyone would like to carpool, please send me a pm. We can try to gather people at RRO or Miguels and carpool to RS. Please also send me a pm if you are sure that you will be able to make it (headcount). Rick will be providing some mcleods, shovels, mattocks, etc, but if you have some trailbuilding tools as well, please bring them with you. As I understand, there will be a lot of materials that will need to be hauled up to the cliff.

If you have any questions, please send me a pm. THANKS!

Just bumping this thread...

I received some pm's from interested volunteers over the last couple of days. If anyone else is interested in helping out, please send me a pm or just show up at the parking lot to Roadside on Saturday, Nov 19 @ 9:30 to 10am. We will start hauling stuff up the cliff at 10am. Most of the work will be around Roadside Attraction, Motha and Five Finger Discount - for those of you who plan to be there a little late.

Drinks, power bars and apples will be handed out midday.

Please remember to bring any trail building tools you might have, esp work gloves. Dress in layers.

We look forward to seeing you guys there and at the evening shindig at Roger's Elementary School! :D

p.s. I never received any pm's about anyone interested in carpooling from Miguel's or RRO, so we did not set one up.

Another successful trail day for the Red River Gorge!

The weather was just perfect as the 22 eager volunteers helped spruce up the trail leading to Roadside Attraction with some heavy duty steps made out of bolted treated wood, rocks, etc. The beginning of the trail was also upgraded with some steps and water breaks. Most of the work was done in approximately 5 hours - afterwards, some of the volunteers enjoyed a couple of the classic climbs at Roadside Crag.

Thanks to all who came and supported this endeavor. Climbers that care rock! :D
