John O'Leary Haight - Goodbye my friend.

It is with a heavy hand that I write this. On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, John Haight left this world and journeyed on. John, who many knew simply as “Hop,” was an avid climber, cyclist, adventure racer, trail runner, whitewater paddler, and all things outdoors. A naturally gifted athlete, Hop is k...

ROADSIDE IS NOT OPEN - IT IS CLOSED

I was at the Graining Fork Nature Preserve this morning and noticed hoards of climbers descending on Roadside. I asked an older couple if they had permission from John to climb there. "No" they said.nI then asked them if they had asked Grant for permission to climb there. No, again. They then procee...

Wolfe County by deed from the GFNP with a reversion back to GFNP if it is ever used as anything other than a park.

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

The parking area for Roadside is a county park ... it is owned and maintained by Wolfe county. I would think that Wolfe County would be less than enthused with a need for further patrols and oversight at an area on their outermost boundary. Any charge for a "service" comes with a legal requirement ...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

(d) "Charge" means the admission price or fee asked in return for invitation or permission to enter or go upon the land but does not include fees for general use permits issued by a government agency for access to public lands if the permits are valid for a period of not less than thirty (30) days....

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

One of the amazing things that Never ceases is the talk of impact. Impact to what? there are no known "special" aspects of the base of the climbs at roadside. Because the land changes over time you call it "impact" its pure aesthetics. There is no actual "impact". A year after people stop going the...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

any incidents of climbers up there Saturday? I was there this afternoon and evening putting up signage. Remarkably, the parking lot was pretty empty. There were a couple of parties who were there before we put up the sign, but they left before we were finished. Thanks to everyone for their cooperat...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

grant, we know each other so I am clearly not trying to be a jerk....Twinkie has the exact same chain draws. I thought it was a bad idea there too, btw. I never considered that anyone would ever be so bold as to hang chains on such a visible route inside the RRG proper. I suspect the USFS does not ...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

Just to be clear, the problems at Roadside are not permadraws. It is greater than that. Roadside is simply a crag in a 80+ acre nature preserve. It has been loved to death by over use. It continues to deteriorate. Want to see Roadside 20 years ago? Stroll over to Andromeda Strain - there are ferns, ...

ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

John and I have been to what climbers refer to as Roadside, but which in reality is the Training Fork Nature Preserve, LLC the past few weekend and what we have seen shocked both of us. One fundamental rule we have always enforced is NO NEW ROUTES OR GEAR is to be placed without our express consent....

Website for Roadside area

I put up a website for the Roadside area (www.gfnp.org) that has a few commonsense rules and regs about using the Preserve. For those that don't know, Roadside is located on land owned by the Graining Fork Nature Preserve, LLC. In turn, this LLC has two members - myself and John Haight (the propriet...

Roadside Issues - Grant Stephens

Since Rick Weber has been kind enough to call me with important issues related to Roadside I thought it would be appropriate to clarify what has been going on there in the past 18 months. As the climbing community is aware, John Haight (owner of the Cave Run Bike Shop and a climber) and I have purch...
