The trick is not to realize you don't know where it is. You simply have understand that it is not you who doesn't know where the wall is, but that the wall doesn't know where you are. When the wall finds you, you will be able to climb there.

Maybe guides have been burned too many times by clients who overstate their abilities and they have to lowball everything to make sure there is a huge safety window?

If you're around enough to need to go to the area then you should already know where it is. I can't see anyone being active with the coalition, friendly with the local developers, and having climbed all the 4 and 5 star routes in the online guidebook, and not be told where it is. Tired of seeing the same people end up volunteering the whole weekend to fill holes. Come on people, we need more volunteers. You can only bullshit with the vendors and your friends so long. No one should have to work more than one shift unless they just want to in order to help the RRGCC.

Good reason to always keep a smart phone with you and use a topo program. Even in tree cover you will get good enough accuracy to pinpoint location and no cell signal is needed.
