Re: Dangerous tree at Pebble Beach

That's actually a fairly common occurrence in the Red. Surprising that we haven't had a serious injury. I recall a couple years ago walking up to an area with several shaken climbers who had just seen a 12" diameter and about 20' long tree trunk land on the ground between them.

Re: Climbing in KY State Parks

Might be a first step, I guess. I sent an email to the tourist development department mentioning the irony of using rock climbing in the visit KY film while making it off limits in the state parks. No reply of course.

Re: ROADSIDE IS NOT OPEN - IT IS CLOSED

OK, maybe I am reading the Graining Fork website wrong, but it sounds like it may be open on a limited basis for those with permits, waivers, etc. Does anyone know for sure? There is also now a page on the website where you can fill out a permit. http://grainingfork.org/ http://grainingfork.org/rese...

Re: News re Muir Valley

Last update I saw showed $68,000. Pretty good start really. Still think at some point you need to charge a per diem or parking charge for long term stability. If it was park property of some kind the budget would probably be $1 million per year. A few rangers and maintenance people, etc. Doesn't tak...

Re: ROADSIDE IS NOT OPEN - IT IS CLOSED

To the owners of Roadside, This was the first place I climbed at the RRG back in 1993, so I have many great (and some not so) memories of the area. I would love to see it opened up again, but if you hope to allow hundreds or even thousands of users into an area over the course of a year without supe...

Re: Helmets or not?

Hmm... Road biking safer? What are the chances of being out on a nice ride in the country and seeing a squirrel run across the road in front of you. Cruising along at 20, no big deal as he heads to the other side. Oops, with no warning his buddy darts out at the last minute and I hit him dead on. Fo...

Helmets or not?

I suppose many of you have seen this. The link was on the Sky Bridge Station Facebook page. It's such an easy thing to do, wearing your helmet. The story also makes me think I should be using a GriGri for sport climbs. It's another easy thing that could really save you in case of rock fall, etc. htt...

Re: News re Muir Valley

Donations to FOMV are now tax deductible. If they can figure out how to "force" daily donations for parking, you should still be able to write it off as a donation. Many of the "Visitors Centers" I have been in have a welcome counter when you first come in with big signs "suggesting" a donation of $...

Re: News re Muir Valley

I know money doesn't grow on trees, but you can't do any other activity for $10 per day per person. If you can't afford that, drive to the nearest national park that allows climbing and see how much that costs. Gee whiz, just pay the $10 and be darn glad to have such a wonderful place to climb so cl...

Re: New Main Trail at Muir Valley

This fish is still swimming... Building bigger parking areas so more people can come climb each day, shitters, soft grades, closely spaced bolts, radios, heli pads, and the list goes on... And the fish swims on... I suppose it's better to have everyone crapping on the ground. A nice mess with hundr...

Re: New Main Trail at Muir Valley

You can preserve it and not allow anyone to use and enjoy it or try to reach a balance. Perhaps you have seen Yosemite Valley, John Muir's love, filled with grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, post office, roads and parking lots. Not to mention millions of visitors each year. Perhaps eliminating th...

Re: Glue-in bolt testing

I know the glue ins are better, but I still wonder about the adhesive. What if someone installed them with their kids paper paste? Ha. What is the life expectancy of the glue. Probably as long as the bolts I guess. Still, I can always put a wrench on the bolts and get a feel for whether they are sol...

Re: Gates closed and locked

Maybe some of the true patriots in our climbing community could purchase some land and form a group akin to the Montana Freemen ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana_Freemen ) to manage it? Isn't that what the RRGCC and Muir Valley is doing already? Thanks to those two groups/people, we still had ...
