Re: From the gym to the crag: The revenge of the gumby

Having been down the path you are on it is great to see you wanting to help new folks get off on the right foot. I have always been amazed how so many climbers know very little about ensuring their own safety or those they climb with. I use to say that some folks have a broken danger thermometer and...

Re: Triumphant Return

I really enjoyed reading this post. I miss the RRG of old and may never make it back as the crowds and the scene has changed a lot as has my body. I have had the privilege of having my son and other young friends get the old guy up some routes. Hope you get that with your kids down the road as it is...

Re: Disability is a perception...

I guess there is some word play involved in terms like disability. Someone who has lost a limb has a physical disability, disadvantage or whatever we choose to call it. What they don't have is a limitation imposed on them by others viewing their situation from a distance. This is an inspiring video ...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice

"First they came…" is a famous statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. How in the world do you justify using a statement about the radical ext...

Mikes Rant

Guess I have been climbing about 20 years now and things certainly have changed a lot in two decades. In regards to folks decking while being belayed with a Gri-Gri I just wanted to see if this makes sense or possibly plays a part in this happening. I am not a great sport climber and when I started ...

Crane Cyclefest

On May 21st NSWC Crane will be hosting their 2nd annual Cyclefest. This is part of the national group known as Ride 2 Recovery. The proceeds go to helping wounded Vets who want to return to bicycling. Inspiring to say the least. Last year there was a young man there riding who had both prosthetic le...

Re: Just Curious As To The "Lame" Comment

Thanks Steph, Although I am no longer a gym owner I tried very hard to give new folks as much good info and habits as possible. I think the current staff at HH are still doing so. I have often said that it would be best to have experienced belayers at a gym to do the belaying for first timers and/or...

Just Curious As To The "Lame" Comment

Hey Dustonian, Whats the deal with the "Lame" for profit gym comment. I can name any number of very involved, community concerned climbers who started, worked at or owned a climbing gym. Rick and Liz learned the basics at a "lame"gym. Hoosier Heights is holding a "lame" comp and donating all proceed...

Be safe

It breaks my heart to hear of an accident like this and it happens much too often. I am praying for the young man. After nearly 20 years of climbing I sometimes wonder if it is worth the chance of severe injury or death. I have personally introduced many young folks (including my son) to climbing an...

Checking with Eric Ulner (Drapers Bluff) might be a good way to go on glue ins. The ones he has placed at Drapers and Jackson Falls are huge and look like they would last forever. I personally have not noticed any degredation of them in the last 15 years. He is definitely an expert at how to install...

Mike was the infamous Zspider on this site. The last I ever heard of Jeff was a number of years back. He use to go to Mikes house and Mike would take care of him and let him hang out at his place. He called Mike from a phone booth one night and Mike said Jeff said the police are here I gotta go. Hav...

2nd anniversary

Today marks the second anniversay of Mike Robison being killed in an early morning car wreck on his way to work. The driver that hit him was intoxicated and swerved to miss a Deer, overcorrected slamming head on into Mike and his small Honda Civic. Mike died instantly having kissed his wife (Nancy) ...
