Looking to climb on Sunday. Would be leaving from Louisville, so I could meet in the Red around 10am or later.
I'm mostly interested in gear routes and am up for most anything. I can lead 10a and below. Happy to follow/hang-dog higher grades.
PM if interested, I'll check back often.

woodchuck, What I want to know is the weight of bamboo per unit length. Such as "this bamboo weighs 2kg/meter". Aluminum pipe is routinely measured in this manner as is most lumber. Foot-pounds and newton meters are torques (ForcexDistance). I would be measuring the breaking strength as a function o...

No, not fly fishing. I'm curious about the strength of bamboo as compared to the aluminum that's usually used in exercise equipment. I want to compare 6061-T6 aluminum poles with varying Outer Diameters (OD) and Wall Thicknesses(WT) to some samples of bamboo. Ideally, the bamboo would be of the same...

Bamboo Rods
Anyone know of a local (Cincy, Louisville, Lex) area that sources bamboo? I'm looking for 6 bamboo rods that are at least 4 feet in length and preferably 1-1.25 inches in diameter. I will buy green or heat treated rods.

I'm saying his testing was incomplete and because of that, his conclusion is innacurate. The shut he tested with grooves deformed under a larger load than the ungrooved shut, yes. But he failed to discuss the effects of the most important variable , the percentage of material removed from the groove...

I've read Kolin's blog for a couple of years. From him and a few of guys on rc.com, Malcom Daily(MDaily, Richard Goldstone(rgold) and and Jim Ewing(sterlingjim) you can learn a lot about the physics principles applied to climbing scenarios. These guys are really looking out for us all. The worn shut...

Drifter, I was thinking about the huge impact the comp created in just one day and was debating with myself which would cause more damage: a few boulderers every day/weekend or the massive crowd of the Triple Crown Event. Personally, I had to make a conscience effort to balance my frenzied desire to...

Hounds Ears
I know a lot of you on here boulder in and around Boone, NC so maybe someone can clear this up for me: I visited Hounds Ears for the Triple Crown this past weekend. It was made very clear that Hounds Ears is only open to climbing one day a year. However, on more than one occasion I heard people (usu...

If the concrete bridge you are speaking of is the damn over Indian Creek over which you can drive and next to which there is a huge flat camping spot, then the approach trail is actually before, not after, the bridge. There are a couple of pylons marking the start and is pretty easy to follow from t...

Would it make more sense to report the median value instead of the average value of the collective votes? That would help weed out votes that were obviously out of wack. For example, currently Prey (11b) at Sun Beam Buttress has a concencus grade of 5.11b. The grade concensus is as follows: 10c-1;11...

Often I purchase shoes based solely on the recommendations of old men on climbing forums. I can't remember ever finding a pair of shoes any other way, especially not by ever trying a pair on. And I certainly don't find the opinions of others who have experience with gear that I haven't used meaningf...

Trad Shoes
What shoes do you wear when you climb all around trad? In the red I find it is nice to have a shoe that edges and smears equally well. For jamming, I want a little extra rubber on the toe box. Currently I climb in Muira's, which are awesome except for the price ($150 and still going up I hear) and t...

Moving to Raleigh NC. Kind of a step down in terms of having a home crag, but I'll be a lot closer to more crags, so it looks like a lateral move. I'll proabably go with a home theater in a box until I buy a house. Those speakers are really meant as furniture, and to be properly utilized you really ...
