Re: Call for Submissions: In the RED

You don't visit for a few days and all hell persists.

Man, I wish I had access to some of those old KY Wilderness threads!

If there are good threads point me to them and I'll ask for permission.

Call for Submissions: In the RED

I'm putting together a collection of short writing pieces set in and around or about the Red River Gorge. Short fiction or non-fiction, poetry, essay, and really great trip reports will all be considered. For all work except poetry I'm looking for 500-5,000 words and will consider anything up to 10,...

Re: John O'Leary Haight - Goodbye my friend.

You always hate getting those calls or texts or emails. I was shocked to hear about John's passing. I've known him since the nineties but only got to know him well the last couple of years. He had energy and passion to be admired and envied. I'm thankful to have known him and regretful it was not be...

Re: Motherlode Hill

one option i think should be kept in mind is using a larger grade of gravel to fill the holes. a few years ago people thought digging out the rocks buried in the sore heel hill would smooth it out but i think of these as anchoring the matrix. if rocks are sufficiently massive to drive over but not ...

Oh my sweet lord and savior baby jesus christ in heaven... Re: Motherlode Hill

The road is definitely in better shape than it was in the 1990s when no one but the oil companies drove on it. I remember once driving down and thinking I was going to have to abandon my car because there was no way a tow truck would be able to get in and get it out. Of course a big tanker truck dro...

Re: Motherlode Hill

Does anybody know who usually takes care of the roads, and whos responsibility it is? The counties? Oil Company? RRGCC? Bald Rock Road (and Fixer Road) is a county maintained road in Lee County. Based on your comments after this one you figured that out. I noticed last week that there is fresh grav...

Re: Motherlode Hill

I think they graded it back in the the spring too. There are also oil interests which contribute to the local economy in the form of a severance tax payment.

Re: Motherlode Hill

I have a Jeep (finally after years of driving low clearance 2WD vehicles in places they had no business being) and climbing out of Bald Rock right now is a rough affair. I put it in 4WD low and crawl out, but it still rocks me back and forth like a sleep-deprived new momma. The creeks are low right ...
