Re: Nice Outside Online arcticle on Muir Valley

I live 425 miles too far away to contribute much time and effort to help out at Muir, therefore I do my best via Paypal to donate. Think of Muir as a huge amusement park. For a fraction of the cost to visit Great America or 6Flags, you get more fun, exercise and personal excitement each day and the ...

Re: Nice Outside Online arcticle on Muir Valley

I would think just maintaining that section of road for access must be a small fortune. Heavy rain washouts, potholes to grade and fill, storm damage and trees falling across the road,,it all adds up several times each season. I use the Friends' webpage to do a paypal donation a few times a year,,se...

Re: Does Miguel have a stash of new guidebooks for sale?

Again, the guidebook and routes are not just intended for the visiting hard core climber. I know Webers were pleased with the addition of the new easier route areas, just to pull the crowds off Bruise Bros. and shorten the waiting lines, crowds, erosion, etc.down there. Thus including them in the ne...

Re: Does Miguel have a stash of new guidebooks for sale?

Yeah I think I know what you mean. The last edition a couple years ago left out lots of northern trad climbs and even areas,(found on line only) due to the lack of interest and focus on hard sport instead. I view the books as not just a guide to ALL new routes, but a sort of history book too of the ...

Re: Does Miguel have a stash of new guidebooks for sale?

If you are looking for guidance to the newest lower grade areas in Muir (Land before Time and Guide Wall), well for some unknown reason they were not included in this newest edition. Remember there are 2 books now; one for the northern gorge(north of the tunnel) and one for all the southern region.

Re: Have you ever placed a pin?

That' what I thought. Mostly old timers. I started climbing in 1971 (yes I am that old) right on the cusp of the clean climbing revolution. On of my first climbing partners had machine nust with the threads ground out on his rack. My experience back then was using pins for aid. I started a couple y...

Re: Long Wall Ambo

So - climbers who are inexperienced at trad think you learn how to place gear on something easy, say around 5.10a. This really is stupid on a stick, isn't it? Reminds me of the one I read about a few years ago. A 5.10 gym climber decided to get into trad by starting on Touch and Go (5.eight) in Eld...

Re: Rocktoberfest recap

I left Muir about 3PM each day and it was totally packed up with cars daily. As for a Rocktoberfest overview, I know the waterballoons on Sat. night were flying fast and furious. As the token 'idiot boy' for 3 hours, I caught one straight in the heart that put me down kickin' for a few minutes. Don'...

Re: The masses descend

Weather forecast for the next 10 days is beautiful low-mid 70s, sunny and dry. Expect a record late registration or pop-in crowd for the RokFest' and bazillions at Muir for at least 4 days straight.

Re: TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU

Sad fact of life. At least keep a bag of your trash in the car and maybe empty it out at the Shell station waste cans or somewhere else suitable. It's a shame there isn't more recycling done in the surrounding counties with containers at most public rest areas and picnic pull outs on the roads throu...

Webers are my role model. They've done it right and are a great example of sharing nature.

In the first pic, I like the '2 tickle finger' belay hand on the grigri. No wonder people have problems belaying leaders with that thing if this is how they use it.

Parking for ten cars only..that'll do it.
With limited parking, maybe a high speed transit train can come into the valley with the new highway changes....you never know.

Re: RRG First

Too bad Off Belay magazine is out of print. I'm sure they would have done a feature story on this, or had a 'belay photo issue' about this time of year. I'm all for the 'Women Belayers of Climbing' calendar going to print soon.
