what you guys are failing to realize is that this isn't a pristine wilderness area and that what will work in back country will not work here in this wild grown but decidedly urban enviroment. There is just as much pressure put on the S.R. as there would be in a city park. Its bad enough there when the drunks piss in the bushes. Can you imagine what it would be like if they shit there too?

To help you realize what the solution is I would like to point out a couple of things and I know that you'll come to the same conclusion/solution that I have.

Look at our area, there are similar entities that have developed systems that work and have worked for years with the same ammount of preesure and more. Specifically at the State Park and some of the more popular areas in the N.F.. You'll realize that instead of trying to reinvent the wheel you should heed the N.F./S.P. methods. I'm sure that there way will work.

We can either go with pit toilets of mulching toilets. Flush toilets won't work because of the volume of water needed. Pit toilets can work but we'd have to invest money we don't have on developing an infrastructure to support the truck that goes in. The only place that that would be a problem is SC and Darkside. If you fixed the dam at SC parking you could get a truck to every place except Darkside. Probably $3000 or better for the pit toilets plus maint. another $150 per pumping. The guy that does the pumping lives on Black log road. The SR is just over the hill from his house so it'd be no problem. He also services porta potties and rents them.
The second solution is mulching toilets. I think this is the way to go. For a couple of reasons. I you could sell little zip loc bags of the mulch as a way to pay for the maint person who stirs the pot. $1 a bag. Two I don't thinkthat its unreasonable to have people watch a short film about how to use a mulching toilet. We could also post directions in the tiolet. A big thing with the mulching toilets is to not load them down with TP. No feminine products either. A guy on a four-wheeler can check/stir/change the pots once a week and that should be adequate.

I'll do that. Me. I'll drive my four-wheeler to all the toilets that we put in and I'll stir the shit.
So I guess If you guys will help me buy the building supplys to build them then I'll take care of them. That list of things earlier was a material' list sans wood. 8)

Pit toilets won't work. Nifty idea that will get us in trouble. Look for Weber's post below: ... c&start=60

Bummer, I know.

I think it would be asking much of the climbing public - being what it mostly is - to walk any distance to a designated area.

Mulching toilets are indeed the way to go--they work really well at Smith Rock, for example.
