Gyms near Pittsburgh

Post by bcombs » Thu Sep 16, 2010 1:23 pm

I'll be in PA next week for work. I found http://www.climbnorth.com/index.html. Looks like it is mostly lead / TR and I'll be by myself. Anyone know if there is a bouldering gym near Pittsburgh?

I went to that gym once. It was combined with an actual gymnastics arena, which was kind of neat (if you are seven, anyway). The rope options they had were pretty limited, and it seemed like they had more bouldering. Not very tall (regular ceiling height, i think). I think there's supposed to be a better gym in Pittsburgh, but I don't know...

I also found this place: http://www.theclimbingwall.net/

Their website is almost as bad as Climb Time. They are open later than Climb North, so I'll probably check it out.

Click on "Classes" and then "Introductory" and tell me what the hell is going on in that photo.

Its not the size of your bouldering, it's what you do with it.

Yes, and http://www.theclimbingwall.net/ has totally missed that point. A ton of square footage, but barely a decent section of wall to climb with. 10 ft of 8 ft tall 40 degree, 10 feet of vertical, 2 feet of mini roof, ...., no clean, single angled walls. I was in Pitts for a conference in August and climbed there one night. O.k. for one visit, was planning on going twice but had no motivation to go back.

To me it looks like some dude in a dress about to get serviced by another dude. But I'm old and my eyes don't work that well, so I'm probably wrong.

Those are really the only two options in Pittsburgh, unless you count the Pinnacle at REI. The Climbing Wall is much, much better than Climb North. Climb North just doesn't have the number of routes/options that TCW does, though the people who operate it aren't as elitist. I drive 25 minutes each way versus 10 minutes just because I'm not a big Climb North fan.

Yes TCW's website is horrible but I don't mind the gym and actually think the bouldering area is pretty good though I haven't really been around to many other gyms. In terms of top-roping or leading, the only other gyms I've been to (2 in Cleveland) blow it away.

Yeah but the outdoor climbing in Pittsburgh blows Cleveland away, so we don't really need great indoor leading/TR.

Holy Sh*t. If the two gyms in cleveland blow it away, you will be better off just blowing your brains out than going to the gym.
