Hitting the wall

Post by climb2core » Tue Feb 07, 2012 3:42 pm

Was out climbing last Friday. Beautiful sunny day at Solar Collector. Warmed up on the 11a, then tried to send Supafly. Fell at top on first go. Rested, and then sent. Feeling good, so I decided to start working out moves on Herd Mentality. By the end of my first burn, my forearms were jello and I had a hard time finishing on the jugs. I thought I would bounce back after that with an hour rest. Got on Buddha Hole and got my ass handed to me. Rested another 1/2 hour... even worse. It was embarrassing. I had hit a wall unlike any other time in my life. I have been tired, but always get something back if I rested. I mean I couldn't even get enough back to make it the next bolt. It was a pathetic crawl to the chains to clean it.

Have any of you ever hit such a profound and non-recoverable drop off?

I found that's the first thing to go when I'm not climbing regularly. Strength stays there and endurance fades, but recovery just disappears for me.

I had the same thing happen to me this last weekend! I was at drive-by on Saturday and really wanted to work out the moves on Easy Rider for the spring season. I warmed up on whip stocking, then did primus noctum second go as my warmup. I felt this was a really good warm up for me, and I was feeling really good. When I started up Easy rider about a half hour later I got to the 5th bolt and my arms just turned to chicken winging jello. I couldn't hold onto anything at all. Had to take at every bolt after that and didn't make it to the top. This kind of angered me as I thought I had a great warm up but evidently something went wrong. I have been climbing throughout the winter outside so I know that the cold wasn't a problem for me.

This is very true for me, I have spent many a wobbling day crying up and often bailing on the 11's at de bib. I'm usually good as new if I can get out consistently after that first embarrassingly painful return.

I hit that wall anytime I take 2-3 weeks off.

I also hit that wall anytime I get fat.

And I also hit that wall anytime I get flash pumped. Do more warmups.

That is not fat Dustin... that is my winter training vest. Although the Superbowl party probably added another pound or two.
