Clarification – Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve and Muir Valley

From repeated comments by visitors to Muir Valley, there is significant confusion as to the differences and relationship between these two climbing areas and their volunteer support groups. Here is a brief clarification, especially for newer visitors to the area.

The Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP) is a climbing preserve located in Lee County that is being purchased by the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition (RRGCC) - a group of climbers who enthusiastically support this preserve and its development as a rock climbing venue. The RRGCC is organized as an Access Fund Local Climbing Organization (LCO.) The investment of time and money from this great group of climbers is resulting in the PMRP becoming one of the finer climbing areas in the Eastern U.S.

Muir Valley is a climbing preserve located in Wolfe County that, like the PMRP, offers free public access to climbers. The preserve is privately owned and maintained. In addition to contributions from the Muir landowner, maintenance and development of infrastructure is also supported by a group of enthusiastic climbers organized as an Access Fund LCO as the Friends of Muir Valley (FoMV).

Muir has 300-plus routes; the PMRP has 400-plus. Muir sees about 160% the number of visitors to the PMRP. Both are great places to climb.

Those wishing to donate time or money to either or both the RRGCC and the FoMV are greatly appreciated and can find info on how to do so at the respective websites: http://www.rrgcc.org and http://www.muirvalley.com .
Many visitors to Muir have expressed the misconception that Muir Valley maintenance and infrastructure improvements are supported by their donations made to the RRGCC. It is important to note that donations made to the RRGCC do not now, nor have they ever, gone to support Muir Valley. Only those contributions made directly to the FoMV go toward the Valley's support.
