So far, my vote goes for Appalachian Spring or Beer Belly.

 "Line of Jerry's" that's funny!

I think pigsteak has a point, not many can give an opinion on what's the best 5.13 at the red BUT many can say what's the best 5.13 they have climbed at the red.

On another note - I hope this thread gets de-railed into a rant about the grade of 8-ball. Anyone breaking into the 12+/13- grade care to give their opinon on the grade of 8-ball?...Meadows, TankAzz

Is that another nemesis route for you, rhunt?

Haven't touched it. I know that if Dave Scott can send it in shitty weather with the flu, then it's only 12b.

13a.. and 8-ball

Post by Noell » Wed Apr 29, 2009 12:32 pm

I haven't done many, but of those I have done, Prometheus is definitely my ultimate fav. I think that route is just perfection.

And on the 8 ball contraversy - there's a reason I've left that route alone for a while... its freakin hard! lol  I wouldn't argue w/13a, but most 'classics' are considered such b/c they are hard for the grade and the climbing is amazing. 8 ball is both of these.

Just struck me that the red does not really have that many standout 13a's. In fact, i scratched my head for a while thinking one one that stood out as amazing, and it was hard to do so. Snooker? Convicted? Second Nature? The force? Tika Monster? All ultra classics but none of these really stand out as unique and special. Seems like if you really want to climb unique, badass routes of the grade, you are better off going to the new. There you have dial 911, quinsana, titan's dice, weatherman's thumb... Each completely different and yet all at the same crag.

As for 8 ball, defently not 13a. I think it would be if it had the same ending as snooker, but there is just not enough to that route! I mean, the first 30 feet are like 5.10 on giant flakes, then you have only like a couple bolts of hardness and the route gives up like a flacid 3-pump-chump teenager on prom night. Perhaps what stumps the common red river gorge climber about this route is that it actually involves (and bear with me here) pulling on holds that are not huge crimps. and you may have to do a cross move and use a bit of technique/footwork. All these things are not in the move purse of a red river gorge endurance monkey.

Yet so many RRG climbers have done it.
