Coffee on Rope?

Post by B-rock » Wed Apr 11, 2012 2:23 pm

Hey All,
I need seem expertise, advise, and insight!...(regardless, of the accidental and simplistic circumstances)...some 'dark roast' coffee got spilled on my Petzl Nomad 70 Meter DRY TREARTED Rope, in a very small section of the middle of the the rope...is it still safe to to climb with? (I know that coffeee may be acidic?)
Thanks,
B-Rock

Was it black coffee? If it had milk/cream in it the pH is probably closer to neutral than acidic....maybe...

Climb on it and see what happens?

They make nylon coffee filters and stain nylon clothing with coffee, but who knows what it does to the strength of the fabric. According to a couple websites, coffee is not that acidic, and the blacker the less acidic it is. I'm intrigued to hear what Petzl has to say.

You should add sugar and cream to reduce the acidity. Plus as an added bonus if the spot is in the middle of the rope it can let you know that you are halfway or that you are trying really hard and just threw up your breakfast.

Petzl said that the rope should still be safe!...and, that coffee has very little acidity (about the same as human sweat)...they recommended simply washing the rope; and then, if the coffee stain is still visible, re-evaluate and perhaps retire. Thanks for everyone's input.

I found pH of 5, which is still quite acidic (100x > [H+] than water]. That said, I would still climb on it, Petzl is right about the sweat thing.

BTW milk is an acid, not a base (pH 6).

The pH of rain water is generally around 5.6. We better all retire our ropes after getting caught in the rain.

edit: or a classic humid KY summer day.

I'll be accepting all ropes... even if they are still wet.
And on the third day, God created the Red River Gorge(by conjecture), and he saw that it was good.
